Classes
All MKG North classes are listed below. Each class has a specific time and day where students and instructors meet. To find the costs of classes, visit the Memberships page.
BJJ/Grappling
Our grappling program draws heavily from Brazilian Jiu JItsu, while incorporating elements from arts such as Silat, Kali, and wrestling. Our instructors are affiliated with some of the most well-known and successful Jiu Jitsu programs in the Midwest, such as Checkmat Minneapolis and Luiz Claudio Jiu Jitsu in Chicago. Our program stresses attribute development, proper movement and body mechanics, and repetition of the basic techniques you need to become comfortable fighting from the ground. Learn these fundamental skills on your path to becoming a complete martial artist!
Jeet Kune Do/Jun Fan Gung Fu
Bruce Lee and his training partner Dan Inosanto electrified the martial arts world in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Comprising 26 elemental arts, Bruce’s system, the Jun Fan Martial Arts, is known for its economy of motion and integration of arts. The Jun Fan Gung Fu and Jun Fan Kickboxing curriculum integrates the close range fighting ability of Wing Chun, the stamina and striking ability from Muay Thai, Boxing and Savate as well as the attributes and tools from close range and ground studies from Silat, Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Catch wrestling and other arts.
Silat
Silat is an umbrella term for many of the martial arts of southeast Asia. These are full-body fighting methods incorporating strikes, locking, throwing, grappling, and weaponry. Although the word silat is widely known throughout much of Southeast Asia, the term pencak silat is used mainly in Indonesia. With curriculum taken from Mande Mude, Silat Suffian Bela Diri, Maphilindo Silat, and Kali-Silat, the breadth and depth of Silat instruction offered at MKG North is among the most extensive in the Midwest.
Yoga
This class introduces breath control, simple meditation, and the adoption of specific bodily postures. It is used to bring harmony between the mind and the body, and reduce anxiety and stress.
Cardio Kickboxing
Muay Thai is known for its legendary conditioning, superior defensive structure and devastating offense. It’s often called the art of eight limbs—Thai boxers strike with punches, kicks, knees and elbows from right and left leads. In class, you will learn how to defend against and counter common attacks, how to develop good body mechanics, speed and power, and how to get in great shape while doing something fun. Muay Thai is an excellent way to build endurance, increase mobility and manage stress. And our “go at your own pace” approach allows students of any physical ability, age or fitness level to participate. The class is interactive and high intensity interval training (HIIT) based. You will get a great workout while training your reaction, timing, and developing a strong defensive base.
Kali
Kali is an ancient word that serves as an umbrella term for all the Filipino martial arts. The word itself translates as the study of body motion. There are many other names for these arts such as Escrima, Arnis or Arnis De Mano. Although the base of the system is weaponry, it’s empty hand systems feature some of the most sophisticated techniques and training methods in existence. The weaponry training covers a wide spectrum featuring stick, blade and knife as well as flexible weapons and weapons of opportunity.
Panantukan/Mixed Arts
Filipino boxing at its finest. This class is intricate, highly technical, and very effective. Panantukan is a ‘dirty’ boxing art rather than a sport-which means you train to hit without regard for rules, so self-defense tools are a staple of this art.
Little Ninjas/Little Dragons
Little Ninjas (ages 4-7 years) and Little Dragons (ages 8-12 years) classes offer your youth the chance to develop self-esteem and confidence, gain physical attributes, and learn martial arts skills in a fun and challenging environment. Our signature belt system provides a well-rounded and youth-friendly curriculum drawn from our stand up and grappling arts. Consistent martial arts training gives shy or introverted children an opportunity to build self-esteem, develop confidence, and refine social skills. Children who are especially active will benefit from the structure and physical outlets that our classes offer. This is the perfect after-school activity! Run a few errands while your child trains, or stay and use our cardio equipment at no extra charge. Your kids will leave our classes feeling challenged, accomplished, and too good to argue about homework and screen time.
Phase 2
Once you pass Phase 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 tests, you will begin phase 2 (sensitivity training and reacting to a partner). During Phase 2, you will develop the ability to respond to your opponent’s pressure, body positioning and structure. Much of the training is close range, where you use ‘touch’ more than sight to anticipate your opponent’s moves. You will learn chi sao, push hands, hubud, sumbrada, and a whole spectrum of energy drills.
